I was *so* looking forward to this prompt day! What’s more fun than dressing up?! I had a blast with Halloween as a kid and dressed up as Spiderman, a very homemade looking Sailor Moon, and Pink Dopey from Snow White (yes, of course he had to be PINK!)
But my absolute favourite costume was my grade 4 costume… a Jawa from Star Wars!! You know, those adorable tiny sand people from Tatooine who scavenged parts to sell. I was obsessed with Star Wars and Jawas were my favourite characters.
My Mom and Oma spent weeks making it ~ down to every glowy eyed detail and potato sack hood. I only have this one picture of the costume kicking around, but it was AWESOME!
I definitely scavenged a lot of candy that Halloween!
What are you dressing up as this year?! Only ONE WEEK to go!
I’m the kind of person who really prefers to look forward towards happy bright colourful days, and not backwards~ because we can’t go back to yesterday and change anything! But I’m going to step out of my comfort zone and show you a person I don’t recognize at all anymore!
Meet me, almost 10 years ago! She still loved a twirly dress, but always wore dark colours as she really didn’t want to stand out at ALL.
I used to daydream of living in a colourful house and looking and feeling like a happy walking rainbow, but I never thought that would be possible for me.
Then in 2015, I started tossing out anything black and decided to stop hiding and live my dream life instead!
These days, I don’t feel comfortable without a big puffy colourful dress and accessories and I feel like me on the inside AND outside (although I still am very shy! :))
It is amazing how much fashion affects how you feel about yourself!! If you’ve ever daydreamed about dressing a particular way, I say GO FOR IT!
Do it to make YOU happy, and no one else. Life is too short to just daydream and not act; become that rainbow! xoxo
One of the things still on my pandemic to-do list is still to READ MORE! I’m a person who is ALWAYS doing 20 things at a time, so doing something simple like sitting down to relax and read is a bit tough for me because it’s so focused on ONLY one thing! But once I do get in the reading zone, I LOVE being able to drift off to dreamy worlds or be inspired by creative ideas!
I have a number of books on the go right now. Lately I’ve been unwinding with crafty books and old friends… let’s take a look!
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon by Naoko Takeuchi ~ I grew up on the Sailor Moon 90s anime (and absolutely inhaled the fanfiction!), and surprisingly never picked up the Manga until very recently (despite knowing most of the plot variations and gawking over the pretty art!) I was shocked at how much I fell in love with it myself and am loving escaping into a positive girl power monster fighting world!
Love at First Stitch by Tilly and the Buttons ~ I’m in the process of learning machine sewing with an ultimate goal of sewing my own dresses (a lot of work to go haha!) but this book came highly recommended. I love Tilly’s blog and the book is just as beautifully written and filled with amazing dress-making patterns and tips for the beginner like me to pro seamstresses!
More Felt Friends from Japan by Naomi Tabatha ~ This book is glossy and stuffed with patterns for ultra colourful kawaii felties and other projects that look like they pop out of my dreams! This is a sequel (hence the more of course!) to “Felt Friends from Japan” which I am very eager to pick up!
Knitting Mochimochi by Anna Hrachovec ~ These are the cutest itty-bitty knit(tys!) I came across the Mochimochiland website and it was another GET OUT OF MY BRAIN moment! They’re amazing projects which are all knit in the round, which I don’t have a ton of experience with, but practice makes perfect and I’m so excited to accomplish all of these.
It’s endless craft books over here! I’ll never have a proper Instagram worthy house because there is always an EXPLOSION of unfinished projects… what did I say? I start projects and then finish them 6 months down the line!
Let’s take a vacation!! You don’t even have to get up from your chair or spend a dime~ a dream come true!
Travel is probably far from anyone’s mind right now as we’re still in the middle of this pandemic. But we all need some way to “get away”, even if it is just in our imaginations. Today is all about top places to travel!
It’s probably really obvious from my blog that I’m thoroughly a homebody. Crowds, getting lost, and time constraints – which is basically most of travel – give me HUGE anxiety. So I’m not very far-travelled, and would much prefer a staycation in my own comfy place.
Doesn’t mean I don’t dream about a whirlwind adventure! And I sure do ~ I love taking a trip through Google Maps and being transported into magical little places, with no airport stresses, no packing, and being back for lunch. Let’s get comfy in our computer chairs (infinitely more leg room than those plane seats!), grab some maps and GO!
My dream vacation would be to spend a few weeks travelling through Japan! I love the idea of spending days shopping and exploring Tokyo with stops at the Pokemon Center, Sailor Moon Store, and Hello Kitty Store! My eyes are exploding with colourful adorable happiness (and my wallet feels a bit lighter)!
I would love to see the inspiring fashions and art of Harajuku, enjoy the restaurants, and experience the art and architecture that have made the city one of the highlights of the world!
However, I would soon need to get away from the hustle and bustle and find some quieter places to unwind. Nara is a UNESCO world heritage site full of history and has beautiful deer roaming the streets!
Now lets travel a little bit closer to home! Gimli (pronounced with a hard g – like the Lord of the Rings character!) is a tiny Manitoba beach town about an hour from where in live in Winnipeg, Canada. If your view of Canada is the stereotype that we all walk through 6 feet of blowing snow, in minus 40, eating maple syrup… you’d be partially right (that’s an average winter day!) However, Gimli in the summer rivals any tropical beach spot~ okay there aren’t bright blue oceans with dolphins, but Manitoba summers are hot and beautiful and unique on their own! I spent a number of summers working near Gimli a few years ago so the town holds a special place in my heart.
These sandy beaches are packed all summer with travellers who want to escape big city stresses and enter a magical peaceful place. There are numerous lake side restaurants and unique shops, and a friendly small town vibe! The town is also host to a fun festival called Islendingadagurinn (Icelandic Fest ~ because the town has the highest Icelandic population outside of Iceland itself!) in August with a parade, sandcastle contests, runs, and viking village roleplays! If you’re ever near Winnipeg, Gimli is close by and it will be in your mind forever!
Parrsboro, Nova Scotia
I definitely have a theme ~ little peaceful beachside towns! Parrsboro, Nova Scotia is the town where my Dad’s family comes from and holds some of the best childhood memories for me!
Parrsboro is a tiny town (only about 1200 people) on the Bay of Fundy, but it can brag about having the highest/lowest tides in the world and they really are something to see and hear. There are tons of unique shops and places like the Amethyst Boutique, Ship’s Theatre Company, and lots of museums for a tiny little town. There are also thick forests dotted with waterfalls, blueberry fields, massive limestone cliffs, and seemingly infinite amounts of untouched peaceful nature. It’s an introverts dream come true!
The Canadian maritimes are relatively small, so if you are ever near Halifax, Parrsboro and the Bay of Fundy should be a definite day trip for you!
