25 Days of Christmas Baking: Day 7 – Gingerbread

Who hasn’t had sugar plum daydreams about living inside a gingerbread house?! Imagine waking up and eating your way through your soft gingery door, plucking off a gumdrop from the roof, or a having scoop of your pink icing snow?! Okay, maybe it’s just me but I dream in SUGAR!

I haven’t made a gingerbread house since I was very young with one of those lovely store bought kits. But lately, I’m all about from scratch baking and learning new skills, so I wanted to undertake the big task of gingerbread house building!

Can confirm that YES, this is a massive task! It took around 12 hours over the span of two days to design, bake, construct, and decorate this cute little house. I’m ready to move in!


There are an overwhelming amount of gingerbread recipes out there! I did a search for easy gingerbread recipes on Pinterest and came across this recipe from Global Bakes, which I picked because it didn’t seem to have an overwhelming amount of ingredients or steps. The dough is tasty and seems quite sturdy when baked, although it was flaky and a bit hard to roll out.

I went with a very house simple pattern that I found here. I drew out the patterns by hand and cut the shapes out of the gingerbread dough with a knife.

To glue the pieces together, I used this royal icing recipe, which I dyed pink.


This was pre-landscaping!

This was the first time that I’ve really done piping (aside from doing decoden crafts)! I bought a piping kit with reusable bags and tips off Amazon, and watched a couple of tutorials on YouTube. I’m pretty proud of how it turned out for a first go!

The best part was when the house was fully standing and finally being able to decorate and fill myself with an insane amount of sweets.

I also made a ton of cookies with the remaining dough!

I wasn’t really expecting the house to turn out as well as it did and think this will become a yearly tradition!
