Thoughts on the Polly Pocket 30th Anniversary Partytime Surprise Compact

For my birthday, I gifted myself the Polly Pocket 30th Anniversary Compact! So I’m incredibly excited to share my thoughts.

If you’re not aware, Polly Pocket was a plastic miniature playset manufactured by Bluebird Toys in the 1990s that was small enough that you could literally carry it around in your pocket! When you opened up one of the candy-coloured magical shells, there was one of dozens of different mini-worlds inside each populated by half-inch plastic dolls that offered up infinite hours of imagination! Like most 90s girls, I HAD to have them all and they proudly covered my bedroom! But the little girls that loved her grew up and the toys collected dust in basements and was mostly forgotten.

Polly Pocket still exists as a brand, but she looks much different now than she did in the 90s. Now somehow it’s been 30 years since Polly first topped our lists to Santa, so Mattel (who now owns the Polly Pocket line) jumped on the wave of nostalgia and released a collectors edition set to reignite the magic of this little part of our childhoods!

I felt like I was 10 again when the brightly coloured box arrived! The artwork is especially adorable! The box is clearly meant to stay in tact and be displayed.

The Keepsake Edition (in box) next to the original 1989 Partytime Surprise playset (in front)!

The Keepsake Set looks almost *exactly* like the original on the inside, although the colours are different and contrast is much better on the new version! All of the details that made the original Polly Pocket sets so special is there, down to the pop-up present and little ups on the table.

The outside of the Keepsake Set is purple and it SPARKLES! I’m really glad that there is some differentiation on the Keepsake Set as it really looks like it’s something special.

For the time being, I’ve chosen to not open the set even though it is so hard for me not to open it and it explore it more closely! I’m really happy that I decided to get it because it brings back some great memories for me! It will be fun to compare them again in another 30 years! You can pick up the set for yourself from here on Amazon.

For some extra fun, take a look at this commercial which features the Partytime Surprise playset from 1994! This song occasionally pops into my head out of nowhere and hopefully into yours now!

It’s My Party!!

…My 30th Birthday Party that is ~ but worry not, no tears here!!

This is what 30 looks like 😀

It has been an AMAZING day so far. I got up this morning really early (as usual… I love mornings!) and immediately started baking my very own cake. It’s pink, sugary, sprinkled, and filled with RAINBOWS! Just like thirty should be!

The recipe for the white cake (coloured with food gel) and buttercream frosting is from Wilton, and I made it with their Easy Layers! Cake Pan Set.

As the cake cooled off, I went outside and did a long run in the cold (brr!) to make room for more cake and treats.

When I got back it was time to blow up balloons, snack around, cuddle the kitty, wear a poofy dress, and blast some fun 90s tunes. Which was the most perfect day!

Sugar learned about balloons pretty fast 😉 Eek!

I celebrated my birthday with my family the other day (one of those being a Christmas Baby things!), so this day is just about ME and that’s perfectly fine and fun! I got some hot pink towels, pink chocolate molds, a pink blanket (I think people know me pretty well?!), and my gift to myself was the Polly Pocket 30th Anniversary Set (I’m working on a longer review post)!

I have to say it was a day that was completely different than what I thought 30 would be like even just a couple of years ago (and what society thinks it should be like!) Not sure why there seems to be a view that as soon as you turn a certain age (30 for instance!) that you need to stop dressing a certain way, stop enjoying things, or stop having fun. In my three decades on this planet, I’ve learned not to worry what other people think.

Yes, it’s so cliche, but life goes by too fast to be what other peoples’ vision of 30 is. Just be YOU and have fun on this fun little ride!!

Once you grow up, you can never go back (or why I collect toys as an adult!)

If you’ve read through any of my posts or pictures, you may have noticed that I have a rather large collection of toys! In fact, my entire house is like falling down a rabbit hole into a world of dizzyingly bright nostalgia and squeeful kawaii happiness! I’m also an adult with a job, mortgage, and child to take care of (okay she has four legs, is covered in fur, and has a MEAN tuna addiction! ^_^)

Don’t worry – I know you probably have questions! I’ve heard ALL the ‘why don’t you grow up already?!’, ‘what’s wrong with you?’, ‘is this a weird AHEM… fetish thing?’ comments. The answers: I’m a proper tax paying awesome adult, absolutely nothing is wrong about things people enjoy, and nope it’s not (if it’s your fetish and it’s legal do your thing – but it’s not for me).

People have many reasons for collecting (and they’re all great!) For me, I collect toys because I really love reliving those feelings of the happy days of my carefree whimsy-filled childhood in the 1990s, enjoy the thrill finding THAT special thing in a shop, getting to buy all the stuff I circled in toy catalogues but couldn’t have as a kid, and then have fun displaying them in my home as they’re a piece of who I am! There’s also maybe a little bit of hope that they’ll be worth a FORTUNE one day! 😀

You’re never too old for doing what you love, but you ARE really crotchety if you’re truly bothered by something that makes others happy.

Here’s some of the stuff I get to come home and enjoy everyday!

Oh! I also have an Instagram dedicated to my toys and toy thrifting adventures that you can follow!
